BrewGearCalc is a home brewing calculator and equipment reference built around one idea: show the formula, name its source, and refuse to answer when an honest answer is not available.
BrewGearCalc exists because brewing numbers get copied between websites until nobody can say where they came from. A figure appears on one calculator, gets repeated on three others, and within a few years it is treated as settled fact even though no published source ever said it.
What this site does differently
Every calculator here prints the equation it used. Every constant is flagged as either a published standard, meaning a documented equation, a measured table or a manufacturer specification, or a brewing convention, meaning a widely repeated practice with no governing document behind it. Both are useful. Confusing them is how a habit becomes quoted as a law.
The clearest example is alcohol by volume. Two formulas are in common use and they genuinely disagree, by a small margin in ordinary beer and by most of a percentage point in strong beer. Rather than silently picking one, this site shows both, names both, and reports the gap.
On equipment
Gear recommendations come from published manufacturer specifications, listed capacities and verified owner reviews. Nothing here is tested in person, and you will not find a sentence on this site claiming otherwise. Where a category has a genuine gap, saying so is more useful than recommending something that does not do the job.
The site is funded by Amazon affiliate links. That is disclosed on every page in the footer and explained in full on the affiliate disclosure page.
Scope
Beer, cider and mead fermentation, and the equipment for making them. Food fermentation is a different subject and is not covered here. Distilling is a separate legal matter in the United States and is out of scope entirely.
Brewing involves alcohol, so this site is written for adults of legal drinking age, 21 and over in the United States.
