Frequently asked questions
- How does diluting wort actually work?
- It balances gravity points. The total sugar stays the same while the volume increases, so the gravity reading falls in proportion. That means the arithmetic is straightforward, but it also means everything else dilutes too: bitterness, colour and mineral content all drop by the same percentage.
- Should dilution water be boiled?
- If it goes into cooled wort or into the fermenter, yes. Any water added after the boil is a contamination route, so boil and chill it first, or use water you know to be sterile. Water added before or during the boil needs no separate treatment because the boil handles it.
